since I have Verizon, but my phone is from AllTel, absolutly no diffrence in the phone, except the little sticker on the bottom.
I think Cingular, Spring and ATT make up quite a bit of the cellular market, since ATT has Suncom, etc.

Sprint only works with Sprint phones.
However, GSM phones will work with any GSM provider (if they support the US's 1900 MHz -- my 1800 MHz French GSM phone won't work here) -- you just have to get their SIM chip. US GSM providers include VoiceStream (all GSM), Cingular (partly GSM, including all of CA & NV), and AT&T (partly GSM).
To make cellular life more complicated, I'm pretty sure that the technology and frequency can vary from region to region for the same provider, e.g. Cingular is all GSM here (CA) since it was PacBell, but it's not GSM in all parts of the US.
Here's a quick summary from Motorola's pages:
So which
service providers can activate which phones?
Here's a list of the major service providers and the bands/modes their networks
operate on:
ALLTEL -
CDMA 800 MHz
AT&T Wireless
- TDMA 800 MHz, TDMA 1900 MHz, GSM 1900 MHz
Cingular
Wireless - TDMA 800 MHz, TDMA 1900 MHz, GSM 1900 MHz
Sprint PCS
- CDMA 1900 MHz
Verizon
Wireless - CDMA 800 MHz & CDMA 1900 MHz
VoiceStream
Wireless - GSM 1900 MHz
