My 2001 Coupe blew an engine this weekend...

Imagine my suprise when the oil lite came on at 4000 miles Saturday morning. The lifters sounded a bit noisey as I shut off the engine. So I checked the dipstick and nada, zip, zilco oil registering on it. Hmmm.. add some oil and it all started running out thru the bottom of TTrixie's engine bay. Further inspection (after taking off the unmarred engine protector from under the car) revealed a crack in the side of the oil pan. Bugger me. TTrixie went to closest (& unfortunatly closed) Audi dealership via flatbed. We'll see what the dealership has to say Mon am. I feel like I'm missing a limb....

Looks like something is pushing the aluminium out from the oil pan causing the 3" crack. Probably not shipment related cuz I've had her for 4000 miles & 8 weeks.

How many miles?
I'd veto a "dealer rebuild" of the engine.
Our experience indicates you'll get a replacement engine. Who can tell what was hurt?
I think Audi is in the customer satisfaction mode; they were with us on a leaking Haldex. They replaced the whole unit.
Best of luck. We also feel your pain.
Be strong, especially with the dealer.

Thanx all- for your compassion. Admittedly my TT has hard an aggresive 4000 miles, but not unreasonable. I do Autocross her every weekend, (and win ASL alot!) in fact she blew up as I was pulling up to an event site Sat am. Fortunatly one of the service writers at my dealership is in the SCCA with me. I haven't talked to him yet but I'm sure he will push to get whatever is best for me. I'm sure I drove for at least a mile or so with ZERO oil, and that just crys out for a new engine.

I hope you took pictures of the bellypan. When I was the Audi tech at a local dealer here, I was constantly getting A4's in with cracked oil pans and the customer swearing that they didn't run anything over. I would put the car up on a lift and find some sort of huge gash in the bellypan and upon further inspection. naturally find a huge crack in the lower sump pan. Just make sure that everything is documented very thoroughly for your own well-being. I'm not saying that the dealer would fight this considering what you discovered under the car, but it's a real good idea to have all your ducks in a row.<p>Jason Dale
