Well my dealer told me that the service reminder is preset for every 10K miles (01' TTR). That means it does not come on for the 5K. Of course they told me when they sold the car that it would so when I brought it in for the 5K I complained about no warning. So when they reset the reminder at 5K it didn't come on at 10K like it was supposed and has now come on at 15K.
The dealer says the service reminder will stay on the dash for a few days when it reaches the mileage and then disappear. Is that true or will I have to stare at the service reminder for 5K miles? In which case I will stop and have it reset now and again at 20K.

Ours never came on at 5K. Dealer reset it (to 8K) which is wrong, there is no service at 13K mi. I complained they set it correctly (5K for the 10K service)
They can manually set it at the dealer to anything. Our car HAS to be set by the dealer because the car will only reset to 8K. this can not be changed.
Brought it in for the 10K service. They did set it to 10K for us (for service at 20K)
Our dealer said they saw a lot of 01 TTs that had 8k interval instead of 10k.

The dealer can set it to go off at 5K miles for the first service if they want. It will require that they spend a minute to do so and then another minute at the 5K service to make it 10k, therefore it's unlikely. Controller can only be set in units of kilometers. So a tech should enter 8 to get 5k miles. If someone says to him 8 and he applies a convertion factor once again then you get 8K miles.
