Default Need advice on Remote Car Starters

I've decided it would be a great antidote to Michigan winters.

What have people had good success with?

How difficult is it to DIY? (skills/tools needed?)

Thanks,

2001 QTR

Default If your 2001 has the immobilizer.....>>

It get a lot more complicated as the key needs to be in close proximity to the switch to start the car...

Default It's difficult. I've done 4, and the TT was the hardest. You will need one that uses a...

Transmod Bypass. A small box you put your plastic key in, to fool the ignition and cluster to think the key is in the ignition.
if you don't have that plastic one, you will need to use another key.

You will also need a device that will work with manual transmissions. You will need to defeat the Normally Closed and Normally Open switches on the clutch pedal, so that you can start the car without the clutch pedal depressed.

You will also need to get at the wiring under the steering wheel, that goes to the ignition switch. These wires are difficult to work with, and will require careful splicing, and very good electrical techniques to splice into.

You are dealing with high-current +!2VDC and you need to be absolutely sure of what you are doing.

However, once it's done, the results are very cool.
Most have a built-in 'turbo timer' Yes, a real one. It will shut off the car, lock it etc. after like a 2-3 min. cool down.

Don't forget, you can use this in the summer too, to keep it cool, when you step into a store for a bit, and don't want to shut off the A/C.

Also, I tried a few times, the start the car with the remote, while in gear, and the parking brake on - fail. It never did start, or over-come the parking brake. but you need to set it HARD.

It took me a full week-end to install this in the TT, and a few hrs in an A4/S4.

Don't ask me which one is best, they all work to varying degrees.
They get more complex to install, if you want the thing to do more. All will connect to the parking lights, all have ways to use the existing door locks, but not all will integrate with the Audi remotes,
You end up carrying yet another remote.

Default its not difficult if you have the wiring code....

i posted the wiring schematics for our vehicle in the FAQ's.... so check that out.

tools required are wire strippers, screwdrivers, electrical tape, and a meter. pretty basic...

luckily for us, our cars dont require any bypasses thank god cuz thats another 100$ part.

but check the FAQ for the wiring, and match up your remote starter wires to the wiring in the vehicle.... give yourself up to 6 hours if you havent done one before.

Default degree of difficulty is relative, even with the appropriate schematics. If you are not accustomed

to such work, then yes, it will be a difficult job.

Also, because of the high-current taps on the exiting wire loom, proper and good solder connections are imperative here, not just electrical tape.

You and I perhaps can assess this and say its not difficult, yes, now that I've done the TT, it's not that difficult, but for someone without the experience and knowledge that perhaps we share, it's still a daunting task.
