Default Those are supposed to require a license from the FCC though.

I guess you can buy them (I saw them at Best Buy, and I'm sure they don't check to make sure you have a license) but what if you get caught using one? It would probably never happen, but who knows. Plus if you have the 5 mile radio, but the people you're talking to have 2 mile radios, they'll get your signal, but you won't get theirs.

Default I think it's based on model. Jay ( I'm pretty sure) had a Motorola

on the trip down to Asheville. It was a top of the line model. Compared to all the other FRS's used (including my decent Cobra's) the Motorola was clearly heard during the whole trip.

Nancy's (sorry) was the other end of the spectrum.

whu whu whu whu uuu hhu uummbbrr ummm whu screech clic : -)

Default The "5 mile range" aren't FRS. They're GMRS, which is licensed. >>>

Some (many) GMRS radios also work on FRS frequencies.

Default hahaha

My Motorola Radios are no-frills as when I got them there were none available with frills! lol

Just make certain to get the radio with sub-channels. That is the ONLY thing really needed.
