Three weeks ago I took my FWD roadster in to address the 2nd gear grinding problem. My dealer was able to replicate the problem and I was told that it was indeed a bad synchro. The AoA fix was to rebuild the existing tranny w/ a new synchro. This was unnacceptable to me as the car was 2 mos. old ,so I called AoA and voiced my desire to get a new transmission. A day later I was told that my request was granted. The service manager who lives nearby even offered to take my car to the dealer 50mis away and have a loaner waiting for me at his house. The manager told me that Audi recognises the defect but maintained that it was limited to the 2000 model year. Since my car was one of the first 2001 roadsters for US off the assembly line the car may have had a "leftover" transmission. The service took two days and the the difference in the new transmission 100 miles later seems like night and day. Before I could not even power shift and the grinding occured every 50 throws. For now the problem seems solved.
The question is : can anyone recommend a "better" transmission oil than stock or should I leave better alone?
It is forums such as this one that alert the public about potential problems that years ago were kept secret by manufacturers. Special thanks to Brad Willis for continuing to offer his help even though he now has a six-speed.

That each time Audi repaired/replaced my tranny it was fine...for awhile. I still don't think they have this thing licked. When I bought my NM TT, over a year ago, they said that there was a batch of bad synchros, and that Audi has solved the problem. Obviously, that was not the case.
I don't want to be a pessimist, just a realist. Hope for the best, but don't be shocked if the problems resurface at a later date.
