Default Newbie Question about Oil Changes

Would you trust getting a simple oil change at places like Jiffy Lube? I will supply my own oil (Mobil 1 synthetic). Are those types of places competent? I called and asked them, of course Jiffy Lube said "We can work on all cars, just come on by!"

Thanks. BTW my car has about 50K miles, so no more free scheduled maintenance.

Default Each is an independent franchise. You've heard the same stories about dealers.

My wife used to work for Jiffy Lube (corporate) and based on their own surveys they could tell that some were great, and some sucked. It all depends entirely on the owner/manager. Just like any other business.

Oil changes are NOT rocket science.

I'm most comfortable with places that let me watch the work.

That said, I always take my Audi to the dealer. He charges $50 for a synthetic oil change.

Default Personally I wouldn't trust them - Changing your own oil is a great...

skill to have/learn and a good chance to bond with your TT's oil filter :-P haha...I say change it yourself then you know its done right...my $0.02

Default I wouldn't.....>>

Strip a drain plug and it's $250 for an oil pan, and a few hours labor to install. The pans are aluminum....If you trust a minimum wage greasemonkey to do this then go ahead!

Default Nothing simple about a TT oil change... >>>

- The "body" is too low!
- The "entire" bottom is covered!
- Can't get the filter out without a "good" fight!
- Don't "strip" the aluminum threads!
- You "will" get oily... very oily!

Default agreed-- the oil filter access problem alone is enough to make me think>>

a quickie place may just not change it at all, or may screw something else up in the process.

Dealer, find a good indy shop that has Audi experience, or DIY.

Default Jiffy Lube, hmmm.....

ripped up lower engine covers, stripped oil pans, drain plugs jammed back in, oil overfilled, lost cover hardware, drained oil not cleaned off engine, oil not drained for at least 15 minutes, etc.

Get an OEM Audi Oil Filter and do it yourself or have a Audi dealer or knowledgable independent do it.

Default Don't do it. Period.

Take your car to a good independent Euro shop, the Audi dealer or do it yourself.
