Filters have flow characteristics that are matched to the engine. Audi designs a high performance filter that works with the oil system to deliver proper flow that physically fits the motor in all respects. Filters vary in their flow characteristics, some high performance filters do not flow correctly, as too restrictive. There are in reality a few companies that make most oil filters but they are not all the same just because they are from the same manufacturing facility. Whats more, there was a write up by MichaelTT a few years ago recounting an Audi engineers warning to avoid after market filters and stay with the OEM part. The filters Audi sells are not a `profit' item; there is no reason to think you can do better than the factory engineering department. Are there other filters that will work just as well as the stock filter? Probably, but do you have $40,000 in testing equipment to make that determination or do your prefer to trust company X's Marketing department over facts / Audi engineering? Why reinvent the wheel?
