D'oh! You can't go expecting me to read the ORIGINAL THREAD!
Besides, I'd be surprised if he thought the 4X actually meant 4 times when used in that context, although Tom isn't all that bright. (j/k Tom)

Let's just get technical for a second and quantify the difference >>>
44x is 6,600 KB/s
48x is 7,200 KB/s
That's a difference of 600 KB/s. That's 36,000 KB/min.
Now assuming a 700 MB CD-R and perfect efficiency, and using the 1,024 KB = 1 MB theory, that means:
48x can burn a full 700 MB in 99.5555~ seconds.
44x can burn the same in 108.6060~ seconds.
So, the argument here is over a difference of ~9 seconds to burn a full 70 MB CD.
