Default Spent 4 months in France in 1991 - In September would do Cote d'Azur in smaller towns just north of

St. Tropez, Cannes and Nice. The smaller towns are quieter and more quaint and less expensive while the tourist attractions are only 20 minutes or less drive from your smaller town B&B. Fly into Nice and stay in or around St. Paul de Vence (La Columbe d"Or). Then go to Monaco and stay in a great B&B (Auberge de la Madone) in Peillon (just north). Then try Cap d'Antibes, followed by Grimaud (stay at Le Coteau Fleuri -just north of St. Tropez). Weather is usually great, tourists are gone, some retirees are on vacation in September. Only good beach is St. Tropez, Everything east of there is course sand. Scenery is fantastic, small towns are relaxing. Good book for B&B in France is Charming Small Hotel Guides by Andrew Duncan avail at Rand McNally Stores....

Default Re: St Tropez is ok.. but I prefer the smaller 'local' beaches in between..

like San Rafael or Juan le Pins (teen/young college crowd). We have a family home in Nice on the beach SE of the hippodrome so it's more convenient for outings into Monaco or the mountains than St Tropez.

Default Or Courchevel in the French Alps? Near Grenoble, Albertville, etc...

...and not far from Geneva. All are postcard towns, and all are close together including Geneva. Geneva is cute but a large city as far as European towns go, and is slightly more reserved since it's a diplomatic destination, but then again I've only been there on business in the low season. I'd take the French towns, you can get down to the Riviera in a shorter amount of time.
