Default Thanks, that is beautiful! I see one Clown fish and is that other one a Parrot fish?

Both are very familiar to me, having seen them in the Carribean numerous times

How wide is that tank? Just guessing, but under 48" right?

How much of the reef is alive? Other than the anemone what other animals/plants do you have?

Where is the other Clown Fish? Camera shy? lol

Default Larry, the big fish is a Naso Tang...I would also say, everything in Evan's tank is alive including

the sand Go ahead, LOL but I'm serious The silcone isn't but the little creatures that inhabit it are. I'll let Evan fill in the rest....

Default Then can I just walk down to the beach here and use real Long Island sand?

It is bright white and can easily be sifted

I am really going to look into doing this for next year. Hopefully I can get the books in January and start reading. I guess I will have to cut down on my AW time, can you accept that? lol

as robby said, its a Naso Tang (from Hawaii.) Parrotfish get as big as VW's, and eat coral. That won't fly in the home aquarium. :-)

60", or five feet. 20" tall, and 16" front to back. 85 gallons total.

> How much of the reef is alive? Other than the anemone what other animals/plants do you have?

robby had it right, everything is alive, including the rocks and the sand. The corals are all animals, actually, and have algae living in their tissues. The algae lives off of sunlight and feeds the animal, while the animal can also take whole food. The livestock list is long.

> Where is the other Clown Fish? Camera shy? lol

one is in the anemone in the shot; the other is down in the right corner of the tank in the pic.

here is some reading to get you started; look further down in this thread-- there are some good book suggestions.

also, this is a good overview of what goes on in a reef tank:
http://www.fishtanks-r-us.com/reefsetup.html

and visit this forum:
http://groups.google.com/groups?oi=djq&as_ugroup=rec.aquaria.marine.reefs

do a google search on reef aquariums and you'll find lots of info. If you start reading now, you might be able to get your equipment next summer and set up the tank in the fall. remember to be EXTREMELY patient. In this hobby, ONLY BAD THINGS HAPPEN FAST. Everything you do in a reef tank has some impact on the ocean, so proceed slowly after reading everything you can get your hands on. And one other thing-- no matter how tempting it is to save money on less expensive equipment, don't do it. Get the best possible stuff and research everything. Search the reef forum, equipment is a frequent discussion. They aren't friendly over there like on this group, but the knowledge base is excellent.

Email me if you have questions.
