Default Yup.. own the same. Great player. The only other thing to consider is the Sony 400 DVD/CD players.

I would wonder about the quality of the laser at that point though.

Default I've been happy with Sony... suggest getting the same brand as his TV if they can be integrated

together. The Sony DVD with a Sony TV usually can be linked together so when you put the DVD in the TV turns on and switches to the right input stream (DVD). Nice function.

Default 5 friends have bought Toshiba at my recommendation and have had zero problems...

and absolutely love them.

The zoom feature is exclusive to Toshiba, I think, and is fairly useful when trying to see a license plate or other trivial feature in a movie.

I do not own stock in Toshiba, yada yada yada...

The 1600 is very high on the price/value scale. Unless you NEED progessive scan.

See the DVD faq at the link below if you are interested in really learning about DVD.

Brands to avoid are: Panasonic and JVC. I personally know people that have had build quality problems with these. Otherwise, Sony is also good.

Home theater Forum

Default Whats your price range?

I personally would stay away from Sonys due to everything that I bought including a DVD player has had problems. I currently have a Toshiba SD9200 and think that you should try to get a progressive scan dvd player. Also if the person travels a bit consider getting a universal dvd player that can play all regions. There are tons of dvds that are in region 4 that you can't get here in the states.

Default On the other hand, I have had nothing but trouble with Sony..

and would never buy another. Didn't learn my lesson with first Sony which broke after a year.
Second broke also- same way- disc drawer won't open to get DVD out.
I have since gone to Pioneer and had trouble trouble at all.

Default Depends on his monitor to a certain degree.

If it accepts progressive-scan output, then definitely go for that as the visible difference between progressive and interlaced scan is like night and day.

That said, I have a Mitsubishi progressive-scan hooked up to my HTDV and it has been great. My bedroom Trinitron is hooked up to a Sony without progressive scan. I like its remote control and other features better, but it cannot rival the picture quality of the Mitsu.
