Don't fret for me. I'm still here and there's coffee on a few dashboards in America
Don't worry, I never leave myself in a stall state. Combine the downshift with the tap of the brakes, hit the gas.
And far more likely, I will pull over and let anyone in a bigger hurry than me to pass. Gladly. I figure if he's in a bigger hurry, then the poor slob's already in more trouble than me.

I'm a very fair person and give anyone a chance.....here is my routine...
I only do this on more than 1 lane street or HW where they can easily get on the passing lane.
Tailgated......
Warning 1</b>
2 light "tap tap"
(usually backs off)
Warning 2</b>
3 light "tap tap tap"
(usually makes the people slow down if they missed the first warning)
Execution</b> At this point, the guy knows very well your annoyed of this immature behavior. So it is save to say that this guy/gal is at full alert for your 3rd tap tap tap tap.
Emergency brake(not using full force, knowing their brakes doesn't cut it).

Recommendation from instructor at recent drivers' ed class....
As soon as it's feasible to do so, turn on hazard lights and pull off to the side - let him/her go tailgate someone else. Not as much fun as the 'make 'em spill their coffee' approach, but certainly safer! And tailgating is also my absolute #1 pet peeve.
