Default OT: Windows question...

My Thinkpad's hard drive is dying, according to the IBM (HAL) Predictive Failure Analysis. So I have a new 6.4 gig hard drive which should arrive within 1-2 days.

Once the new drive arrives, I will have to install an operating system on it. Currently, I have a Windows 95 CD-ROM. However, I may be able to get a reasonable deal on Windows 98 or Windows Milennium.

What do you think, should I stick with the '95, or do the newer Windows OS offer a substantial advantage?

Default Windows 98 dos FAT32 filesystem

to make decent effective use of the big disk. SR2 of Windows 95 could do that also, else you're wasting some space, etc..

Default Depends on what is important to YOU

Windows ME is the newest OS for home use. It contains new updated drivers and USB support that earlier OS's like 95SR1 doesn't. If security is a concern then Win2K or Windows NT. For overall ease of use and flexibility i would choose 98 or ME . Suggest you go to some sites like:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/upgrade/upgradewhich.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/upgrade/upgradewhy.asp
http://zdnet.com
http://twocows.com
and which contain a lot of helpful information to help you arrive at your decision. Good Luck!

Default I'd go with WinME, it's really Win98 version 3. Win2K is still too much like WinNT...

...and does not like many apps... especially multimedia apps. Many folks at work are going back to Win98 after trying Win2K for a while.

BTW, what kind of system do you have? Keep in mind that anything after Win98 needs alot of HP to run effectively - like minimally a PII 3-400 and at least 64, if not 128, MB of RAM. If less than that, then you might be better off sticking with Win95 SP2 with the FAT32 filesystem. DO NOT install the "original" Win95, it's a real POS.

I'm using a somewhat older laptop with an Intel 166MMX Pentium chip and 80 megs of RAM.

WinME was actually a major upgrade. Its the first (non-NT based) windows not to run off a DOS shell

Default Then I agree with PGTT. You need RAM to run 98 and more RAM to run Me.

If all your stuff worked fine under Win95, stick with it. 128MB Ram was not enough on my Compaq Celeron 500. I added another 64 to be happy with it.

Any thought to buying a new laptop? I just got a Dell flyer today, and the 3800 series starts at $1200 for something that is 5-8 times faster than what you have. It is Christmas, you know!

Default Then Win95 SP2 might be your best bet. Any newer Win will bring that system to it's knees.

I could not even effectively run Win98 on a 200MMX w/ 128MB RAM and had to revert back to Win95 SP2. Just too processor intensive with all the IE integration.

Thanks. Doing a cost/benefit analysis, I'll probably stick with the system I have. After all, it seems to suit my needs, and it's not like I'm trying break down the chemical composition of Cosmoline or something. Besides, I thought 80 megs of ram was a fair amoung for a laptop. No?
