Using a Dell Inspiron 3700 right now, love it! PIII 600 w/ 256MB RAM & DVD - great for planes!

Default Bottom of the fair range, but yes, it is a fair amount of RAM.

I understand your keeping the laptop.

I assume it's a dial-up internet / word processing / spreadsheet box, knowing what your career is, so it's good enough for that for certain. Back to our regularly scheduled "Who Wants to Buy a Millennium" conversation...

Default Stay away from WinME for about another six months. Not enough drivers, Win98 is best for you.

Format FAT32 like Juliem said & you should be fine.

Default Using all windows including the new Whistler... here is my opinion

It really depends what software/games you use. I use Windows 2000 Adv. Server at home, and it runs GREAT!!!! All my games work, etc. Plus it is so much more stable then ANYTHIGN else I use. Plus I have a Dual processor system and so I can only use Win2K to use them both...

but if you are on the lightweight side I would suggest Windows 2000 Pro. If you are too afraid of the NT Kernel then use ME, but honistly you will be happier with 2000 Pro, much more powerful, plus most laptops now come with it.

Also from now on ALL Microsoft OS's will be based off of NT. The new Microsoft Whistler will replace ALL current operating system, both Windows 2000 and Windows ME. It is based off of the NT Kernel. Windows 2000 has all the perks of Windows ME, plus the stability too boot.

Nothing beats my Unix machines, both at work and at home, but if you are going to go with Microsoft, go with Windows 2000 Pro.

One more side note, use WIndows 2000 pro if you have 128MB of RAM or more, anything less use ME.

Default Considering your CPU/RAM I'd go with 98SE. ME is "ok" but..

Driver support isn't quite there and it still has some kinks. Your CPU isn't exactly state of the art so you want to balance OS features against that. WinME or Win2k Pro would not enjoy a 166 and 80megs at all, 98 should be fine though.

Default That's the second comment about driver support. Which are you missing?

I find Me to be fine for my hardware.

Voodoo3
Toshiba DVD-ROM
USB Devices: Kodak DC280, Canon 8200 Inkjet, Intellimouse Explorer
Seagate Travan 5 tape drive
Compaq Presario 5724

What he said. Limited drivers for ME, 2000 is overkill for you.

Default Windows 98 SE I have it running on a similar IBM Thinkpad as you a 760XL...

166 mhz with 64 mb. Your 80 megs should be fine as long as you're not trying to do major graphics manipulation or heavy gaming. This laptop is used primarily for internet and email and am running IE 5.5 Not the fastest pc in my house but it does a respectable job.
