Default Please tell me if a 180Coupe will be a noticeable upgrade in performance from a GTI VR6...

I don't wanna sound sillly but.

an audi TT 180Coupe with a chip, K&N and exhaust - how much better in performance than my 98GTIVR6?

Will the TT be a considerably better in performance as my 98GTIVR6 with the same mods? I want oto trade up and if I do I want something that is a noticeably better in performance than what I have. I don't want a "sidegrade" I want to make sure its an upgrade.

Of course it is obvious I could starve and get the 225TT but that is competley impractical to me.

My plan is to buy a 180TT Coupe with about 6-8Gs set aside for mods. Mods that I want to put on very close after break-in period

(chip, K&N, Coilovers, 18"ABTs, exhaust - thats it nothing more, not turbo upgrades - thats it)

So my question again is do you think mod for mod the TT is gonna be better than the same mods I have sunk into my GTI?

thoughts?

Default I would never consider a TT of any kind "side trading"...

ditch that GTI(awesome car BTW) and move on up to the TT...

Default I can answer that for you...

As a previous GTI VR6 owner, infact I had the same year GTI as you as well as a Garrett chip, I can tell you that even a 180hp TT would be a good buy if you want to begin modifying.

The VR6 is a very tricky motor, and extracting horsepower through bolt-on's doesn't always result in noticable improvements.

As you probably know the 1.8T engine is a marvelous engine. Smooth running, gobs of torque... and the best part is it takes to engine modifications very well!

Mod for mod you will feel vast improvements in the TT as turbo engines take to modifications much better than NA engines.

Case in point...a single ECU upgrade on a 180hp TT will bring the hp up to about 205-210hp at the crank.

Get a TT.

Default My experience...

I recently sold my 97 Golf VR6 (after owning it since new) and got a 2001 225QC TT. First comment... they are very different cars, the handling, stability and control is much better in the TT. Power... the 225 is definately faster but there is not as much difference as I had hoped for. It seems the 4 cyl + turbo + 6 spd need more work to make them fast compared with the great low end torque of the VR6. Another difference is that the TT does not seem as quick off the line, although I think its partly a matter of technique.

Overall I have not regrets getting the 225 TT. Its a much better car and great fun to drive.

Straight line? No, not unless you chip it or get the 225.

Default We have GTI ('00) and 180QC. Chipped GTI is faster...

and lots lighter. To be fair, GTI has GIAC chip, K&N 2.5 in cat-back, Eibach springs, struts, front & rear antiroll bars, 17 x 7.5's with 225/45 730's.
It'll run to 100 with our chipped Impala SS, which ain't no slouch.

It's an autocross winner (with a good 22 yr old driver), and attracts fewer cops than Mom's TT.

The reasonable engine mods have been done. Any significant HP increase is VERY expensive, and a modded 180 probably faster. Remember the power/wt ratio of stock GTI is about the same as 180 FWD, but better than 180 Q.

Entirely different cars, of course, in spite of shared platform.

Did you see GTI commercial during the Super(?)bowl?
