Watch 'Out of Control' on Discovery Channel some time. People do things with no reason.
Usually, they are young teenage boys trying to prove their worth.
Remember the paint ball kids in CA? They started out bashing cars with bats and then people, and then paintballing them.

this is the key point, I think...
Things that draw 'attention' can be a problem.
It could be your car, the "No Trespassing" sign on your property, your nice new streetside mnailbox, whatever...
The TT draws attention under any circumstances (strike #1). It's a relatively expensive, stylish, sports car (oops, more strikes?). People notice expensive cars, stylish cars, sports cars. People notice colors that stand out (e.g., red, yellow). People notice fancy aftermarket wheels, vanity plates, etc. Somnetimes they notice and appreciate, sometimes they feel jealousy (with or without good reason), sometimes they notice and want to cause trouble.
If someone is out looking for trouble or is at least easily diverted into causing trouble, a TT is probably a better-than-average target. It's a sad fact. The only place safe from vandalism might be your home garage, but it gets boring staying home all the time or taking a cab. After all, you bought the car to drive, right?! So, going out into the world of anonymous parking lots where thieves and vandals lurk entails some risk. (Don't worry, I don't like it either, and I just got door-dinged last week by some annoying weasel that didn't take responsibility for their actions)
Back to vanity plates - yes, they can help get your some more (possibly unwanted) attention, especialy if they say "the wrong" thing (could be something controversial, or could be something innocuous that just has meaning to the vandal-of-the-moment). But my guess is that *probably* the plate wasn't the issue, and the bad guys just wanted to damage 'a' car, and yours stood out more than the others so they picked it. Or maybe it was closest. Who knows. It stinks, but there's not much you can do about it if you want to drive a great-looking car like that TT in public - people (cops, thieves, admirers of nice cars, etc.) are going to notice it, and sometimes that can be a bad thing.

It broke my heart
reading about the incident with your car. One thing is for certain. Don't blame yourself or try to figure out what you may or may not have done to cause this. The simple fact is that whomever did this gets their joy from causing pain to others. It's a sick frame of mind. Its the bully in school, the teen thats vandalizes a public building or work of art, someone who throws rocks off overpasses, a crook who shoots a clerk in a store after they plead for their lives . . .
Don't waste another moment feeling guilty and by all means don't let them take away something that you love.
