RR Texas and Gnowknayme are dead on correct.
My theory is that there is a strong emotional link between TT car and owner. I attribute this to the fact that TT owners (as distinguished, say, from Porsche or Mercedes owners) are more likely to be driving the most expensive car they've ever owned -- so they have a stronger bond with their auto than these other owners.
I think that Audi is very smart in pricing the TT at a level that is just at the cusp of the "fine line" level: this way they get people to stretch into a $40K+ car (a territory that they haven't been before) and feel good about themselves in the process.
Since both RR Texas and Gnowknayme were right in guessing the theory, they will have to fight over who gets the prize. Let me know how it goes, guys.
