The TT and A3/S3 use a Haldex active differential wheras the other Audis use a Torsen differential. The reason for the different systems is packaging, the TT/A3 have a transverse mounted engine while the other Audis all have engines mounted north/south. The current Torsen diff is only available for cars with a longitudinal mounted engine.
The Haldex diff in the TT has a FWD bias but is able to transfer power to the rear axle when it detects slip. The Torsen has a normal 50/50 split and is a completely mechanical system, it transfers power as the slip occurs.
The advantage to the Haldex is it is lighter, has less drivetrain loss and is more fuel efficient. Does it work any worse than Torsen? I can't say, I've not driven a car with a Torsen differential. But, I do drive the TT in the rain and drive it pretty hard and haven't had any sketchy moments, it's really quite drama free, just point and shoot.
