Problem starting

I have a 2001 TT Quattro Roadster with 23k miles on it. Occasionally, it does not start with the first crank. At first I thought it's due to low gas in the tank. Today, with a quarter tank left, it happened. Every time it happened, I will let go of the key and turn the key again. On the second turn of the key, it always starts properly. Any suggestions as to why this is happening? Thanks.

Turn key on, listen for fuel pump to run and shut off, fuel sytem pressurized, car will start right up. Everytime I don't wait it will crank unusually long or not start on the first try. Have gotten into the habbit of just running the pump before starting. I thought there was supposed to be a check valve in the fuel pumps that prevented the pressure from bleeding off after sitting overnight? Possibly a problem on our cars??? Alot of people have complained of this.
