My car came without it and i am thankful... I have been through some nasty storms, never spun it and never got it stuck. For a performance car it really is amazing. The only thing i sweat is the front valance getting beat-up by chunks of snow the plows leave behind. I am sure you have all found the same to be true.....

how are your times overall as compared to others in your class? I can see this being the case if you have not auto-x'd very often or run towards the bottom or mid-pack. But a better driver will do better without ESP.

before ESP was offered. It was rushed into production for the TT and was the first car Audi sold if I am not mistaken that came with ESP. It was added to the car along with the rear spoiler and the MkII suspension to try and "save the TT driver from themselves", not because it was a good thing for the car.
If ESP was such a panacea why does it have an off button? ABS is a good thing for most drivers, but it is always on and can't be turned off without jumping through a few hoops to accomplish that.
Traction control in the TT is the same thing, it can be turned off. Their has to be a reason why. It's because these things are not perfect and could be dangerous in many situations.
Personally I don't like all of these driver aids, they take away too much of the driving pleasure of being able to control the car and not have a computer do something not only unexpected but completely wrong in most situations.

....especially if you do something really crazy, like enter a corner WAY too fast. I think most people who don't like it feel that the ESP triggers too quickly, making 4-wheel-drift fun impossible.

You can't take a turn "too fast" or ESP will slow you down. You really can't push the car to your limits, forget about the car's limits. ESP kicks in too soon and is too intrusive.
I have driven other cars with ESP and it is not nearly as intrusive as it is implemented in the TT ESP system.
