Re: timing belts... if you have another problem on the road (e.g. fuel pump) and haven't had your belt changed, an unscrupulous mechanic may proclaim your problem was a timing belt failure and you now need major engine repair (I had this happen to me, and I'm convinced he messed up the belt, valves, etc. once he had it in the shop).
I ended up paying $1000 to tow it 250 miles to a repair guy I trusted and it STILL cost me $4000 less than what the original guy was quoting me!
