. At 80 in 6th (6speed) what is your rpm. 5 speed seems to have really good pull away power but seems to be geared to low, is 6th a overdrive? If it is you should be able to get better gas mileage with 6 speed but no one ever says so. i had a old 914 that you never shifted into 5th until 70 .

Basically they geared the 6 gears closer together compared to the 5 gears on the 180TT. I can never find the gear ratios when I want them...hopefully someone else will post, but I beleive the 5th gear on a 180 is .81 (or so) and the 6th gear on a 225 is .87.
If I remember correctly, the RS6 has a 6th gear out around .68. I would like to see what a transmission like that on a 225 would be like. I like the idea of having a gear way out there for highway driving (where acceleration isn't important). We'd be getting 35mpg regularly. :-)
I'm sorry I don't have the actual numbers. I trust someone will correct my guesses if they are wrong.

it's a little more complicated to compare gear ratios between the 5-sp and 6-sp trannys, since the 6-sp has a higher (numerically lower) final drive for gears 5 and 6, compared to 1 - 4, which have a lower (numerically higher) final drive ratio.
Confused? I hope not.
Here are the speeds at redline (6600 rpm, except in sixth) for the 225:
1st - 34 mph
2nd - 55 mph
3rd - 81 mph
4th - 106 mph
5th - 132 mph
6th - 143 mph @ 5960 rpm.
Engine rpm @ 60 mph in top gear - 2500.

For the 5-sp 180TT
Top speed by gear @ redline (6600 rpm, except 5th):
1st - 37 mph
2nd - 62 mph
3rd - 92 mph
4th - 117 mph
5th - 130 mph @ 5960 rpm
Engine rpm @ 60 mph in 5th - 2750.
So in top gear, the 180TT is geared lower overall than the 225TT.
Enjoy!

i am sure not a expert but it seems that at least in the 6 speed that 6th would be geared for max fuel efficency at the expence of pulling power as you could always shift down to pass, my 5 speed seems to be screaming at me at 80 "shift higher idiot!"

all of the American cars I have owned had those over tall top gears to compensate for horrendous fuel economy.
Out of four previous American "performance" cars, none had a useful top gear. The TT has a useful and flexible top gear (good for top speed AND acceleration) yet still returns great fuel economy.
Welcome to the 21st Century! (and to German engineering).
For comparison purposes, the most recent BMW M3 is geared even tighter than your 180... with a much larger engine. Talk about wound up!<p>-EJS, 2001 225TTC, Silver/Black
