question about differences between model years
i'm thinking of buying a TT... and i was thumbing through stats...
it seems the 2000 had a 9.5:1 compression ratio (like the current 180hp models) and it had a 3.93 rear axle and a 5speed...
the current models have a 3.3 rear axle, and either 5 or 6 speed...
the 2k's also are 100lbs lighter...
and the 225hp models have 9:1 compression...
does this mean that the 2000's are a little quicker?
and why do the engines with less of a CR have more hp??? (this might be a dumb question, but i'm new to these cars, so humor me please)
Thanks very much!

all TT's are FWD even quattros until slip is detected
there is no rear axle ratio
final drive ratio maybe?
180 hp FWD models are lighter than quattro
theoretically should be a little quicker

Re: all TT's are FWD even quattros until slip is detected
oh, i'm sorry, i meant quattro for all of them...
i'm not even considering FWD....
and yeah, i guess it meant final drive ratio... it was on cars.com under the specifications...
i mean, i guess what i'm trying to figure out is if theres any real differences in the model years?
which year would be the *Best* if there is any difference?
i would think a 9.5:1 ratio would be good for spooling the turbo faster... and i'll worry about knock as i increase the boost...
what makes the 225hp model have 225hp? is it any difference in the engine? or is the boost upped an extra psi?

All the years are basically the same, a 2000 might not have esp (traction control) ...
and a 200 also might not have a suspension recall. The 2000 also only had a 2 year warranty while the 2001 had a 4 year, so you have a better chance of getting some warranty on a newer one. It seems that all the model years seem to have the same quirky problems.

Not exactly correct....
2000's do have traction control, but no esp if the recall was not done. They had a 3 year warranty, not 2. Depending on how you drive there is a big differences between a MKI and MKII car. So if you are looking for a fwd, you might want to find an older one. Also, there is that spoiler thing....
My 2 cents

Re: All the years are basically the same, a 2000 might not have esp (traction control) ...
what "quirky problems" do these cars have??
hmm based on the info, i think i'm best off with a 2001 TT Quattro...
ok, and one more really beginner question... i used to have an eclipse GSX so we'd use an s-afc and a profec B to tweak fuel and boost... but i see that audis/vw's mostly use "chips"... can someone give me an explanation...
i'm looking to put out SERIOUS power in the future... is this the right car to try and do it with?
i'm kinda leary about going from a 2.0l to a 1.8... but its obvious the audi/vw engine is a much more cleverly designed unit than the 'ol mitsu 4g63 i've been using....
basically i'm just looking for advice...
thanks to all!

Anybody drive a 2000 vs newer years?
I would think that 3.93 vs 3.3 rear axle ratio would be noticable not not mention the higher compression. I know my 2K feels really quick compared to other cars (non TTs) I have owned. Also I guess I got lucky with mine the previous owner had the esp installed but not the MK2.
