question about tires...

The other day I was driving with my girlfriend in her Honda and we noticed that her tires needed air. When I checked them with my guage the pressure read 36 psi (the recommended pressure for her car) but the tire looked seriously low. I double checked it with another guage and it read the same. My question is, how can a tire look so low, but still read the correct pressure? BTW, I filled her tires up to 40 psi (the max pressure stated on the tire itself) just so that they wouldn't look so low.

They were probably fine....Tire pressures will increase a few lbs as they heat up. Most Honda's spec 29-30 lbs if I remember....(without going out to check!)

Like in the morning before you've driven anywhere. Driving causes heat which raises pressures. All manufacturers specs are "cold" pressures.......
