Default Question... car is in the shop with ~18K mi... Ins. Co. will only replace 1 tyre.. they say..(more)

that the other 3 are fine.
I have always heard that you shouldn't have tyres on the same axel which
have more than 10k mi difference in tread ware !!!

Is this true? I'm going back and forth about them paying for it, but they are being a huge pain.... does anyone have any further info I could use for this?

Thanks is advance !!
Alex

I'll go double-check, but I thought the manual said only replace 2 at a time.

Default It pretty much does, then the service circular contradicts it!

Yup, the manual says: "For safety reasons, tires should be replaced in pairs and not individually"

Then the service circular for replacing the blowtenzas says: "The use of tires with varying degrees of wear will not adversly affect the four wheel drive transmission, if so equipped."

Guess the answer depends on who is footing the bill!

What happened to yours, LighTTnin?<ul><li><a href="http://tech.vw.com/audipdf/awa0011us.pdf">Service Circular</a></li></ul>

Make them own up to their own "safety" advice, change them in pairs.

Default Rog, I don't read that the same way you do. And you took it out of context.

I have read the new addendum to the manual for the tires.

I do not have a copy in hand, however. From memory, it says the quotes you posted above, true, but they are not contradictory. You should not run on much different tread for safety reasons, but different tread won't hurt the quattro system. That's all they were saying.

Still haven't laid off the "Blowtenza" ****, I see. Lots of us hated the 040, and lots of us LOVE the 730 Potenza.

All of that being said, there were horrible spelling and grammatical errors in the manual addendum I read. And they kept using the words "gouge" and "gorge" wrong. To paraphrase: If you get a "gorge" in your tire, have it replaced. Do not drive over a gorge. No duh, driving over a gorge is impossible without a bridge! I don't think it was bad translation in this case, since I don't think the addendum was made for Europe, unless it was translation from French Canadian! (the addendum is in halves, english and French)

Default Good point Ivan

True, the 2 statements are about different issues...safety vs. what the quattro can handle.
Based on what the manual says, Lighttnin *may* have a chance of convincing his Ins. co to pay for 2 tires. Don't know, but think it's worth a try.

Sorry for using the 'B' word. I don't take this whole thing nearly as seriously as some of my posts may sound. Stuff happens, esp. to tires, esp. in NY in the spring. I give Audi a lot of credit for addressing this at all. After all, tires are the one thing the warranty does NOT cover. So...I promise never to use the 'B' word again :-)

The 730's...yeah, I know. I just can't justify the expense right now (I'm probably on the lower end of the income scale on this forum). Guess I'll just have to work harder on wearing out the 040's.
