I saw a pic of a VDO gauge which had a red needle and everything else in white. But in another with the illumination on, it was all red. So my question is, is the VDO gauge's illumination red & white or just red? TIA

I've used them before in BMWs and GTIs and I think you could go clear, green, or red bulbs/covers... light comes in from the sides like on the Autometer gauges

There are different gauges you can get; some have translucent faces and illuminated needles, others just have a bulb lighting the gauge from the front of the face. Also, VDO offers translucent plastic covers in various colors, (blue, green, red) to color the light the gauges gives off. Check the differences between VDO "Vision" and "Cockpit" gauge lines.
