Default Called a big NO NO in Virginia...and there is a somewhat recent change>>

So you are cruising from lets say NY thru Va to head south...got your radar detector on and see Va Sign...Welcome to Va and BTW Radars are Illegal so you demount radar and drop it into the glove compartment thinking your safe..well not any more...new law of the Virginia land is the device can not be reachable by the driver and the glove compartment don't hack it..must be in trunk or inaccessible space by driver in a normal reach. And yes if you are stopped and the fine State Police see you detector in the glove compartment it is theirs...confiscated on the spot thank you so much...such BS

Does this statute give them the right to search the car?

Default dont think so

the unit is supposed to have no power and be out of the reach of the driver or passenger, unless the cop has reason to believe that a unit would be present I dont think so.

another interesting point is that they are only illegal to use on "highways" if you check out the VDOT website, not all roads in virginia are highways.

Default I lost 3 detectors when I was younger + the fine

When I travel to DC to work now I either take it down before I go or put it under the seat when I get to VA. VA state cops are hard asses (no offense to you police officers though)
