Conclusion at the time (non-scientific) was ASR kicking in for a quick second. My scenario was pulling into traffic out of my street onto main road, between 1st and 2nd I got this noise. I shift into second as I come around onto the main street.
What about Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)? Could this be making a noise?
I have a FWD TT.

I had a rumbling sound in my 225Q when i backed off the throttle at 110Kph/65Mph and it was very noticeable as comming from the drivetrain. The noise was a very low frequency and not a tinny rattle.
It turned out to be the dual mass flywheel and the 2 sections were interferring when under deceleration. This was a known problem and fixed under waranty.
I had my car repaired yesterday and the noise has gone and the drivetrain feels a lot smoother when backing off.
