is it really a bad cluster?

<center><img src="http://<img%20src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/139726/my_picture.jpg">"></center><p>I think I'm going to get a new battery to see if some intermittent problems get resolved with my cluster. The damn thing just doesn't come on most of the time now, however, when I take off the battery terminal and reconnect, I get full instrument display. Adding to the problem is that when the cluster is off, the hazard, boost gauge,ASR button, and defrost button have no backlighting. Is all of this part of the cluster operation? Doesn't seem right. Seems more like a case of low voltage obstructing full function. Never thrown a battery tester on it to date. Last time I put a new battery in it solved the problem a little bit as the date did not reset immediately. That was short-lived. Hopefully the cluster is not gone south yet. I can live with the date being reset and probably won't replace the cluster if it is that. Well, only if Audi ponies up. Otherwise if it works, I can sell the car. Wouldn't think about selling it with a dead cluster otherwise.

We musicians have a saying in our circle of friends that the more you drink, the better we sound. Seriously though, I think it is something loose. Ever since I put that boost gauge in I have had trouble, and that is where all the relative backlit instrument buttons are.

short as well. See if you can borrow a decent meter and check the resistance at the battery terminals with them disconnected and then start working your way around. Open circuit is just that, not 1 meg ohm or 10K.
I have allready seen the aftermath of a couple of fires on this board and that's plenty.
Good luck.

Check the connection on the second, smaller cable on your positive battery cable.
Don't overtighten, as the post/nut will shear off.
