Rebuilt vs. New Transmission
Last week I took in my FWD TTR (3000mi.) for service to address the second gear synchro grind problem. Dealer said yes it was a bad synchro and that AoA said fix was to rebuild tranny with new synchro only. I told them to shove it because I didn't pay 40K to have a car w/ a rebuilt transmission and that I would only settle for a New one. Am I wrong to think that there is any difference? Perhaps it would actually be a better outcome with a known "good spec part" going in rather than taking a crap shoot w/ a new transmission which may have the same problem again?

Depends...
My experience with synchros is that there is a lot of luck involved. There is nothing inherently wrong with the rebuilt one. I would stop by the shop and talk to the monkey, let him know you are an enthusiast and care about the gearbox. They will spend a lot more time doing it right. Then drive it for a couple of weeks, if there are no obvious problems in 500 miles- put redline oil in the box.

Keep us posted. I'm about to drop off my 225 TTQC as well for grinding problems. Any ideas as to what makes synchros fail?<p>2001 TTQC 225HP Silver/Black
