as long as you don't *need* to carry more than one passenger, it's fine. If you occasionally *want* to carry 2 passengers, there are still solutions - ride in their car, or take more than one car. Maybe not ideal, but it does work.
(If you're that worried about the environment, you shouldn't be driving a car anyway :-)
If you're in sales and need to carry clients around all the time, it's probably not a good solution.
same goes for carrying stuff. if you work in a band and need to carry your drum set, or if you're a golfer, etc., then you've got a problem. but if you only rarely need to carry something big, then as long as you have a friend who can help you out occasionally, you'll be all set. yes, you'll have to learn to pack carefully - the TT Coupe has lots of interior room, but the TT Roadster trunk is certainly small.
I suppose another issue is if you have to park in semi-dangerous places where you feel a convertible top or just a fancy car of any kind might be at risk.
otherwise, a 2-seat roadster can be lots of fun ... :-)

..place for a convertible. It's never too hot in the summer to have the top down (try a convertible in Arizona in July) and the winters are mild. I've had the top down regularly every month of the year.
And when the top is up, the TTR is still a great car. Works fine in lousy, rainy weather. In fact, since the defrost system only has a two seat cockpit to control, I have less trouble with fogging up than my wife does with her A4.
