OK. 19 years after this post I'm about to do the same. I rescued a hurricane flooded TT Roadster. I've had it for 2 months now and I can now drive it around the Condo. Just finished Shift bushings but had to do fine tuning to get into R. All control modules are toast so I plan to run as much as I can with a switch panel. Window motors and regulators are frozen and need fixing. Window motors can be disassembled mechanically but the electronics may need to be bypassed {voltage reversing rocker switch). Back to your post. Thanks for making it sound so easy but I don't seem to be as agile to get it out but I'm going to try.

Red wire goes closest to the baseplate. DO NOT mix up the wiring as then the rotation would be in the wrong direction. Next bolt the unit and baseplate back together. As movement is restricted and everything is a bit slippery from spilt oil this too is a PIA assembly.
