roof ski rack

Here was the thing
I was trying to get at...
The overall functionallity of the Thule rack far surpasses the functionallity of the audi rack. Believe it or not, Yakima and Thule (even tho market competitors) make almos interchangable accessories...more thule things will fit onto Yakima products than yakima onto thule....
point is, you can find one thing that works the best, and go with it. you have more options. all the functionallity, and at a fraction of the cost. plus, once you pop on that cool *** fairing, the style of the rack just went up 100 points and the look of the rack on the car just jumped up too. yakima and thule fairings won't fit onto the audi roof rack...

style vs. functionality
far as I know, no fairing avail for Audi rack.
but it looks great without, and isn't that noisy.
as you say, if you get it, you're mostly committed to the Audi matching components, but that's not necessarily bad (though possibly more expensive).
I don't think there's much to compare with the components style-wise, but if you're looking to save money or go for ultimate compatibility, then I guess the Thule rack is an acceptable alternative. The only real complaint I have is that (so far) haven't seen any good kayak attachments for the Audi rack (though maybe someone else has found something).
FYI, base bar cost is $340 from Clair Parts, ski rack attachment is $98, bike fork rack $95, full bike rack is $104, surfboard carrier $125, haven't seen a kayak carrier yet.
good luck whatever you choose.
