Default Rough idle

Sometimes I have a rough idle while sitting at a traffic light. Not so bad I think I'm going to stall but enough to notice something is probably wrong. When I turn the car off it doesn't shut down smooth like I remember it did when I drove it off the lot. Any ideas before I ask the stealership to look at it?

2000 1.8L with new spark plugs, coil packs, struts, springs, AC compressor, Forge DV, and timing belt. I've almost got 80k on it.

MAF is still a good candidate. Do you have access to a VAG-COM?

Default Check the coil packs

I had a rough idle when I started my car and it got so bad that it barely stayed cranked. I looked at mine and number 2 coil pack was sticking out of the hole. I pressed it down and the roughness stopped.

Default No.

I probably replaced the MAF 5k ago. I know I did the coil packs around the same time. But the problem has been for a while. Just increasing lately.

Maybe the alternator not providing enough power? I am on my 3rd battery already.

Unplug the MAF and see if the problem goes away. The ECU will use the default maps.

Default Try searching this forum or the A4 forum for rough idle. VAG-COM could be a big help. Where do you

live?

There may well be someone on this forum that can help you.

Lots of things can cause poor idle, but MAF and coil packs would be high on the list, along with vacuum leaks really dirty air filter, fuel filter, bad gas. etc..

The good news is its probably something mundane.

I had a similar problem that was caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor.
