I give my router a host name: tt, and then I gave it the domain name: wi.rr.com (yours will be diffrent if you are not in Wisconsin)
Then I plugged in the MAC address of the computer it was perviously plugged into. I restarted the router (1 min), and presto it worked

Are you getting a link light on both the router & the cable modem when you connect them? Thats an easy way to determine if you've got the "wrong" cables.
As to the MAC bit, if the Tech gave them a MAC from the modem then odds are thats not it...definitely do not program the MAC of the modem into the router.
I'd also double check to make sure that the router is DHCP'ing from the modem. My router has a mechanism to drop/restart the WAN side, and I then can see if it received an IP address from the modem. At least then you can start to ping backwards in the chain to find it.
Oh, dang, almost forgot....you might want to restart your computer after putting the router in the middle of everything. I've found some variants of Windows don't like having network changes (w2k seems to be ok as long as you enable/disable the interface if you're having problems). As an alternative you can try to release the DHCP'd address on the computer and reacquire it (ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew).
Very weird....good luck,
Dale
