Default Sharp whirring sound at start-up, any ideas?

Ever since it started getting pretty cold at night (Seattle, 25-35 degrees)the car has this very brief whirring sound when it starts up. Only lasts a second or so and then is gone till the next day when I jump in the car in the morning.

This doesn't sound good, but being that is has only started since it got cold, i figured it might not be something to worry about.

Default Does it sound like a jet engine? And only lasts for a few seconds?

If that is the noise check your air pump, or cold air pump what ever it is called, had that happen to me, one of the hoses popped off of there and it sounded like my car had a jet engine...

Default mine does too every once in a while on cold starts

it may be due to the valve timing which has a self adjustment system that may produce a weird sound for 1 sec., until it adjusts, acc. to the manual it is normal.
I wouldn't worry about it as long as it can be heard only on cold starts.

Default Does anyone have a diagram of where this air pump is?

I think mine sounds like a jet engine too....more like an exhaust manifold leak when its cold, but nonetheless...too loud.

Thanks!

Default my sound is probably NOT valves, but I can't say for sure since >

I don't know how the timer adjutment system works; it's not just cold valves or clatter.

Default Yeah, it kind of does

ugh, guess I'll have to go digging to see where that hose is.

If a hose has popped off though, I would think there would be some kind of affect on the car besides just this noise at start-up.
