Shifting issue resolved, and it's far from what I thought>>

Decided to look at the shifter problem at lunchtime today. For those who missed my original post, my TT suddenly started refusing to select reverse, but 1 thru 5 worked fine. According to the information I gathered, the problem was likely to be related to the side-to-side shift cable adjustment.
Printed out the Diesel Geek procedure for adjusting the shifter cables, taken pretty much straight from the Bentley. Seemed like a lot of work, and I figured I could achieve the same result thru trial & error. So I set out tweaking the side-to-side adjuster first one direction, then the other, with no success. Almost ready to throw in the towel, I realized something most peculiar. There was a foreign object caught between the shift cable bracket and the transmission, about where the red circle is in the photo (can't see it b/c it was underneath the bracket). Recently one of my battery cover screws went missing. Must have not been tight and rattled out. Well, needless to say, I found it.
I took this opportunity to play with the side-to-side adjustment until the shift action is absolutely perfect. Much better than it's ever been. I definitely recommend tweaking this if your shifter is notchy-- the cables probably stretch over time and thus need periodic adjustment.
