Default small coolant leak on start up. Then it goes away when warm.

So last week my wife wants to take the TT out. As she backs up i see a small pool of coolant under the car. I get the car up on ramps and can see from the right side of the motor when looking up there is some coolant spalshed about but now none is leaking?

It seems that only when the car is cold, like it has stood for several hours or overnight, when started it looses about an 1/4 of a cup of coolent.. then stops..

If i leave the car running it just clears up and stop leaking..

I assume this is a water pump or water pump seal but i'm totally guessing.. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

Default The turbo after-run coolant pump is a common source of leaks.

Do you see any white dried coolant drips or sprays around the pump? (Front right side of motor.)

i dont think its that. only because i know where that is and its not leaking or wet there. it seems to be lower. could it be a return hose from that pump perhaps?

That said could it also be as suspected a water pump or is that out of the question?

Thanks
Dave

Default Could be anywhere I suppose. Leaky waterpump is not out of the question, but unless you've had that

recently changed, I've not heard of a water pump that started leaking. Has the water pump been recently changed? If so, maybe it wasn't tightened down enough...

Nope its been the same pump for at least the 10k i have owned the car. It seems odd that when i looked again tonight there is no leak when the car is warm. But i know when i start it up in the morning it will leak, I think i may have to put it up on ramps overnight and start it when i am under it cold in the monrning to see where it is coming from.

Yep, it could be that as it warms up, something swells and stops the leak.
