Snow chains on 17'' has anyone used them?

Snow chains on 17'' has anyone used them?
There is snow around here only 5-6 times a year so it is not worth it to buy winter tires (if anybody would stock'em). Can I use snow chains (only for a few klms). I have read the manual and it says not to but I cannot see why since there is enough space. I tried a search but did not find a definate answer.. Any help is welcome
