Default So, is anyone buying this coil pack conspiracy thing???

I'm leaving my Mark I coils in - I think the DFRB Coil Pack Mafia is behind this... I won't be a pawn in this sicko chess game of theirs!!!

So, can somebody PLEEEEEEAZE explain what the hell these coilpacks are and why they are all failing? Is this a VAG component or is it outsourced - like the Bosch DVs? If the latter is the case, is this affecting other manufacturers?

Default I don't buy into conspiracy theory...unless it involves my drive to work and

TDFRB SCHOOL BUSES!!!

Default The coil packs are little bands of wound-up monkeys that make the engine noisy...

The coil packs are electrical devices that attach to each individual spark plug, storing and delivering the energy for each spark. They replace the distributor and coil setup that you'd find on an older car; they're fully electronic rather than mechanical (distributors are mechanical). Coil packs are more precise and controllable than distributors, allowing engine management computers to control timing and duration of spark, allowing for more specific engine managment. You can see them in the picture below - they're the little glue-filled squares on top of the valve cover:

One is also removed for reference.

As far as I've read, this is a supplier issue, namely Bosch (though I'm not sure who's who). However, I have heard that the Hitachi units are susceptible as well, suggesting that there might also be some bad design specs from VW/Audi.

Default Well, just about every part is out-sourced. Audi doesn't make the coil-pack, suppliers do, ....

made to Audi specs.
The coil pack takes a 12 volt signal form a set of sensors, feeds it through a "coil" of wire that boosts the voltage to like 20-25000 volts, to directly fire the spark plug.
This technology replaces the "coil" on the side of your car, near to the "distributor". (you don't have that anymore either.)
It's actually very simple electrical properties.
Remember Physics 101?
Wind a coil of wire around one side of a 'U' iron pole 10 times.
Wind a coil of *smaller* diameter wire around the other side of the 'U' shaped iron coil, say 100 times.
Put a voltage source on the first coil, say 12 volts.
Measure the voltage on the second coil = 100X12= 1200 volts.

Same principle of the coil pack.
I suspect the failures are coming from the high-voltage side of the coils
Small diameter wireXheatXstress of repeated firings= coil burn-out.

A re-design of the coil, using electronics to monitor the input and output voltages, current/ current draw, and a feed-back circuit to keep it all in spec. is what's required.
I'm speculating here, but I'll bet that's what the problem is, and what the fix is.

Default I had mine die at about 83k miles and the 2nd died at 84k.

I have since replace them with Ignition Solution's coilpacks and still testing them out.

not exactly correct. They don't replace the distributor, they replace the *coil*

Oh - I see... thanks... so you'd say the control module replaces the distrubutor, then?

Default Apparently, the packs that are failed are made by Bremi....see link.

I don't think I'd want to be a member of the Bremicker family this year ;-D Can you say, "no bonus, son."<ul><li><a href="http://www.karlynsti.com/Folders/Bremi.htm">http://www.karlynsti.com/Folders/Bremi.htm</a</li></ul>

Default Hmmm....just saw a Bosch rep on a grassy knoll talking to a VWA operative...quite please..

I'm trying to listen!
