timing belt tensioner failure? I'm gathering up parts for the timing belt replacement and the tensioner is not available locally, except through the dealer. I will replace it, because it just makes sense to do it, but I got curious about the durability of the tensioner.

Default Doubtful. Since all the other related parts are so prone to failure (the belt, the water pump...)

No one has pushed the tensioner beyond TB replacement, to my knowledge.

My stealer says they replace the tensioners "JIC"...aka won't do a TB without it.

Huh? I thought the tensioner was the primary source of failure. It's named in the 105k service.

Default Also, don't assume that the dealer knows what they are doing. >>>

There are two parts that are sometimes confused. The part we call the "tensioner" is the tensioning damper. There is also a part called the tensioning roller. My dealer only replaced the roller (twice) claiming that it is the "tensioner", but its my understanding that the damper is the part that may fail. (Had to go to an independent shop to get it done right.)

Most of what I've read is the belt broke or the water pump crapped out.

Default The timing belt fails when the tensioner fails or the water pump fails.

The timing belt itself does not just break. The belt failure happens when another component causes the failure, generally.
