Over the Thanksgiving holidays I was privileged to be able to visit a private car collection owned by Marshall Mathews who lives in the hills above Palo Alto. His collection started with post WW2 cars (mostly Ferrari's and Porsches) but he quickly gained an interest in pre-war cars and these make up the majority of his collection. I'm not familiar with many of these except big names like Pierce Arrow and Mercer but despite that I was very impressed. Also with his garage which is an engineering marvel - even more so if you saw where it is located. He has about 30 cars here and almost all of them run and he drives ALL of them.
Unfortunately, Marshall was diagnosed about a year ago at age 53 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALM - Lou Gehrig's decease) and can no longer speak - he carries a wipe off board with him to communicate. Despite being somewhat unsteady on his feet he still drives and seems to truly enjoy sharing his cars with fellow enthusiasts. Truly a very nice guy and his wife Nancy was also extremely nice.

there were only a few of these of these and the originals were never found intact. This is a reconstruction on an original(?) chassis.
thanks for sharing - this looks to have some important items.

If so, I really don't know much about - in fact I had never heard of it before - but it sure was cool. Watching him go through the starting procedure was incredible - have to be a real enthusiast to drive this car around.

garage. You would want to sell your second soul for what was next to it (which I DON'T have a photo of) - a 1954 300SL Mercedes ROADSTER! You teh 300SL gullwing car? Well this was the roadster version and it was impectible. I don't have a photo of it because some friends from Germany were out driving it when we got there and by the time I saw it return it was dark outside. Still, even in twilight it was a beauty!
