Used to do that on my Spitfire, but
only because the reverse synchro was shot; only way I could go to reverse without grinding.

Nah... as long as you are in a complete stop before releasing the clutch you are fine.

If the car sits in neutral with the clutch out then...
many times it will grind into reverse. I always go to first gear before reverse in that situation.

Thats how I usually park...I guess I can't be doing any damage by shifting into first before reverse

Don't park with the car in neutral. Then you're relying only on your parking brake for stoppage.
Keep the car in gear to assure less movement

my driveway I flat, I only park it in gear when on a hill. Benefits of parking in gear on flat?

Only if you get a grinding noise (because there's no synchro on reverse)
