Default Someone who understands exhaust tubing or metals... input needed please...

I've been talking to a local exhaust fabricator about my downpipe, and he mentioned something I had not heard before: that stainless steel can become brittle and crack when subjected to heat repeatedly. He went on to say that many exhausts that are supposedly "Stainless Steel" are actually a mix of stainless and some other metals, therefore resisting corrosion and heat failure.

Also, he carries some tubing called "Aluminized" wich I gather means steel coated for rust protection.

Anyone who knows something about metals and their properties care to comment? Is "Stainless Steel" tubing actual a hybrid metal? Forgive my ignorance here, but I'm looking for some expert advice before I go talk to the exhaust guy again.

Default I believe tubing is 304...not sure about muffler casing or innards..

the exhaust temps will not get close to temp deg limits specs for 304..but I do know what your exhaust fabricator was talking about...but was on a rather expensive outside grill. Natural gas type with SS racks for briquettes...after one season of use (searing those steaks etc)clean grill and the racks were so brittle they crumbled in your hands...SS to carbon.

I'm thinking about trying either 304 or 321 for downpipe... I wonder what SGI uses?

Most aftermarket SS is 304, OEM's use 409- its cheaper.

Down pipe is definitely going to get the higher temps...adjust tubing spec accordingly...

Default for downpipe use 321 stainless steel...for the rest of the exhaust system 304 is fine

most SS aftermarket exhaust systems use 304 SS.
For high temp applications like turbo downpipes, turbo exhaust manifolds, etc...use 321 SS

and if you don't mind spending the bucks you can even get inconel tubing...the ultimate in high temp stuff

Use 347 filler rod to weld 321 to 321

Use 308 filler rod to weld 321 to 304

Use 309 filler rod to weld 321 to mild steel

Default Thanks... what about 347? One helpful person suggested it as well...

because its easier to weld.

I think Inconel is probably over the top of what I'm willing to do.

Default more info..321 or 347 will work..321 more available

Within the 300 series of stainless steels, there are four types: 304, 316L, 321, and 347.

321 and 347 are known as stabilized grades of stainless. These are alloyed with either titanium (321) or columbium (347)

Both 321 and 347 are good choices for turbo applications but 321 is more available

316L is an extra low carbon (ELC) grade of stainless that has only .03% carbon It is used in marine exhausts
