How can I see if the clutch were not fully disengagin the tranny?

Default I didn't really mean "see". With the clutch in, do you get a grinding sound as you try and engage...

reverse? That would indicate that the tranny is still receiving power from the engine because the gears should be completely motionless at idle with the clutch in.
