Default Steve, couple Oil Cooler questions:

How did you hook up the fan electrically? Is it always on, does it come on with the radiator fan, is it hooked up to an oil temp controlled switch/relay?

How did you get the OEM cooler off of the OEM 4" nipple - does it just slide off? It seems like it should per this picture:

<img src="http://images12.fotki.com/v216/photos/4/435091/2617734/TTOilPath-vi.jpg">

Is 21 a nut of some type? Or does the oil filter hold the OEM cooler to the car? Does 10 hold the nipple in from the back side (don't think so, that wouldn't make sense...)? Is 10 the part to the left in the image below? If not, does the part to the left below show up in the image above at all? Do you have a part number for the nipple/part to the left of the nipple below (neither has a number callout in the image above)?

<img src="http://images14.fotki.com/v219/photos/4/435091/2617734/TTOEMNipple-vi.jpg">

I think someone else asked this, but what is the +/- to plugging the OEM fluid hoses supplying the OEM oil cooler, rather than hooking them together with a coupling (the latter would allow the original radiator fluid flow to occur)?

Default I'm not steve but......

#21 is the nut that holds the OEM oil cooler on. #10 is the plug that is in the place of the oil temp sensor. Some VW's on-board computers used to have oil temp and the sensor went in that location if I remember correctly.

Default Looking at Steve's Fotki again, 21 is clearly the nut that holds the cooler on.

Remaining questions:

Fan electrical hookup
Nipple part number
What is the part to the left of the nipple? Is it in the picture just for illustration?
OEM fluid plug vs. coupling +/-

Default There is a nut that holds the nipple on >>>>>

its 27mm.

Also, removing the coolant lines from the exchanger itself is a megapain. i traced them into the engine bay and detached the other end.

Lastly, i think his parts list is wrong. He lists two 3/8 to -10AN adapters and two 1/2in to -10AN adapters - both the oil cooler and the sandwich plate should be 1/2NPT, so you just need 4 1/2inchers.... see if the oil cooler is threaded 1/2NPT, if it is, remove the nipple, and get Summit Racing Part number EAR-829010ERL - 1/2NPT male 90 degree to -10AN hose end. Save a lot of clearance vs steves setup.

Default Some answers.....>

1) 21 holds the cooler on
2) #10 is a 10x1.0 plug and can be used an al alternate port for a temp or pressure sender
3) The part to the left comes with the sandwich plate to hold it on.
4) the coolant lines are a parallel system. Removing them at the source or just plugging are alternate ways to go.

Parts list were for the sandwich plate I used at the time. I now have a Mocoal in there which has different port dimensions and is no longer plumbed for an alternate seder point.

The fan is on a manual switch and is really optional. I rarely trigger is as temps stay well within acceptable limits even under hot and hard driving. I just had it sitting around, Seemed like a better place there than hanging on the wall.

Default I would suggest removing the hoses that >>>

go from near the motor to the exchanger, and connecting the two nipples. I dont like the idea of dead-end lines with coolant in them.

Default Do you suggest the Mocoal (Mocal?) over the other? Is this the other that

you had referenced:

<img src="http://images14.fotki.com/v218/photos/4/435091/2617734/SandwichPlate-vi.jpg">

I am guessing it is PER181.

If you suggest the Mocoal, where can I source it (firing up Google now).

Default I would go with the Mocal, and in your climate Mike...>

I'd go with the thermostatic one.
