In Steve's Pic he shows you cutting a threaded side of the nipple off of the factory 4" nipple. He screws this into the brass looking adapter that comes with the sandwich plate, this in turn screws into the block...
With the thermostatic sandwich plate the nipple is too short, to compensate I cut 1/4" of threads off of the other side of the factory nipple, ran this small "spacer" into the bottom of the brass adapter and then screwed in my full length nipple and all was well.

would think it would be better to have that as one piece so that no oil could bypass the filter? Or do I still not "get" the situation?
Actually, if I think a little longer about what you said, it sounds like you are putting a piece of pipe thread into the brass adapter threads, then chasing it with the stock nipple, is that right? I thought the sandwhich plate was thinner than the OEM cooler... Not the case? Would you recommend getting a piece of pipe and make a proper length nipple? It doesn't look like anything special - just some stainless pipe. Got a diameter?

your starting to get the idea, the brass nipple is threaded on one end for the oil filter to screw on, the inside of the brass nipple is threaded to allow you to thread the nipple that will screw into the block.
I tried to find a nipple the right length; but could not, it is not a standard electrical/water, size pipe, instead it's a NPT size/gas pipe size. -Good Luck finding one

First, thanks for the pic!
Second, yes, the function of the brass transition piece finally hit me late yesterday. I was unclear from all the previous pics.
New Questions:
1. Do you know the outer diameter of the nipple? I won't find one, I will make it to the right length (cutting NPT threads is not an issue, I plumbed my Dad's house for natural gas).
2. Do the -10an unions swivel? Stated another way, can you turn the blue piece (tighten the nut) with the red piece (that is crimped to the hose, right?) stationary?
Thanks for the assistance!

As far as turning on the NPTs, what I found worked best, (i.e. no leaks first time go), was to tighten the machine thread 90 down into the sandwich plate on a vise with some tape. Then I would insert the hose into the red which turns without the blue turning, I then used a vise to tighten this connection. Then dry mount on the car, cut the hose, perform the same process on the other red end. Then finally I placed the whole process together and tightened down the blue onto the 90
