Default Steve, remember my post about engine speed oddity...

My car has been at the dealer for over two weeks and they concluded that it was due to the TTDA. They say that when they replaced it the car behaved properly. I don't mean this as a jab at the TTDA since I has been great for months. I just wanted to know if you thought that a dirty filter may cause such behavior. I have filter cleaner and oil on order, but wanted to get your feedback while the car was still in the garage.

Oh, and how often do you recommend that the filter be cleaned? How many times can it be cleaned before being replaced?

Click here for the full description of problem: Original post

Thanks.

Default Well....I find it hard to believe a filter would cause that unless...>>

It was absolutely clogged. These are easy to clean using the kit and should be done regularly depending on the conditions you drive in. The K&N is a lifetime filter and can be cleaned many many times...

I'm not sure I buy that diagnosis unless the conditions of the filter were as above...

You're the only one to ever report something like this...

Cleaning

I've noticed that if you use front mounted feeds, a lot of stuff is sucked up into the box and the inverted part of the cone gets dirty fast. I'd clean every 5,000 miles under these circumstances.

Non force fed, you're probably good for 10-15K or so. K&N's actually work a little better with some miles on them. They are lifetime filters and will clean up nicely even when crusty.

To remove filter, take the box out of the car, remove the vinyl edging from the filter side and the whole endcap with filter attached can be removed. Follow the K&N procedures fro cleaning, Lightly oil, and re-assemble.

Default even if it were, why would it cause a gear to stick?! I can see surging or loss of air

due to clogging but not as the thread noted. I'm very wary of dealer diagnosis on anything. My experince with Audi techs has led me to believe I know more about my cars internals than they do... and that sucks! I think when they see an aftermarket part, they love to claim that as the cuase and call it a day. F.

Default Seriously... Is this your first time at a dealership or what? They are liars and crooks...

If an aftermarket part is at fault then it is not covered under warranty and/or they do not have to do any work. Now put yourself into the shoes of the lazy technician being paid minimum wage and ask yourself, would you really look into a problem any further if there was an aftermarket part that you could blame for it and go back to napping...

Default Thanks...

Non-force fed here but the weather is quite dusty so it may be quite mucked up by now. I will definitely try to clean it out and see if it makes a difference. I'll let you know how it goes.

Default Actually, the gear is not sticking - the engine speed is just holding

Having said that, I am totally in agreement with you about dealers. Unfortunately, I don't have much of a choice. This was the original Audi dealer. A new one was just set up here but when I went to them they told me they have no parts for TT's and hardly any experience with them. So I am back to the horrible original.

Default Looking at the filter element should hold the clue. I would have to

think it were engine or clutch related.... is your car under warranty? Did the dealer do any service to it just prior to you experiencing this issue? It sounds very odd to me and smells of dealer "cover-up".... Typical.

Default that's what I meant... I never fixed my original posting. As far as dealers:

find yourself an independent European car specialist in your area....

Default None of the above

The car is out of warranty.

No work had been done to it recently.

Dealer says both engine and clutch are fine.

The only variable that has changed recently is that the weather suddenly got significantly colder. - don 't know it that may make a difference
