say what?
10w30 if anything would be MORE of an issue in winter, but bottom line, it's the wrong viscosity so it's an issue period.
also, Audi's recommendation is 5w40... 5w30 is considered an acceptable alternative if 5w40 is not available.

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a mechanic.
OK. Logic would dictate that a heavier weight oil would be less inclined to lose its viscosity. In a hot running engine, wouldn't you want such an oil? Why wouldn't the 10 weight be more beneficial in the 1.8 than the 5 weight, especially in the summer months?

by that logic maybe you should run 20w50, or some straight SAE50?
Audi's engineers have determined that 5w40 is the proper weight for the 1.8T.
PS I went to GA Tech, man.... remember?

No, no. You misunderstand me. I wasn't contradicting you at all.
I was just expressing my lack of understanding, likely based on flawed logic on my part. I still don't understand why a lighter weight oil is better in a hot-running engine. I also don't understand the thought processes of the female example of our species. Any help with either of these puzzles is greatly appreciated.
PS. I forgive you for going to Tech.

the idea is to get a particular rate of flow to keep everything lubricated>>
so it's based on tolerances and other factors in addition to operating temp. that's why you see all these new engines recommending 5w20 (example the 02+ Miata does) -- the tolerances are so tight that a thicker oil, even at the high operating temps, would not flow well.
This is also why, especially in older motors, you will start to use thicker oil as the miles get high (worn bearings, etc). The idea is to stay in the sweet spot for flow rate.

What brand and weight of motor oil do you recommend for the summer in Canada(=Mobil 1 not available)
